Update: 27 May 2010.
The island’s Tua Pek Kong festival will be on May 27, 28, 29(Sat), 30(Sun), 31, Jun 1, Jun 2 . There will be live opera shows on the first 5 days followed by 2 days of Getai shows in the evening. Bumboat ride is free from 7pm to midnight. Do not miss this opportunity if your are a photo enthusiast.
The Chinese opera stage has been around since the early sixties when it was built for community use by a rich timber merchant. Empty most of the time, the stage is lighted up 2 times a year during religious festivals.
Opera shows are held to honor Chinese dieties housed in the temple opposite the stage. According to local elders, this is a ‘reflection’ temple built for convenient access. The 150 years old original temple is further up a few hundred metres away and its dieties carried down ceremoniously to be entertained during festival periods.
Colorful lanterns and bright colored flags adorn the jetty. Great opportunity for photo-shoots. Unfortunately I didn’t know that a festival was on and got time for a few shots.
