Jack the wild boar

Jack the wild boar

This is Jack. This wild boar was a piglet when it was injured and rescued about 14 years ago. Today, Jack’s growing tusk is about poke into its cheeks, causing lots of discomfort. Its about time for it to be cut.

Update: 9 February 2009. Jack should be happier now. It was sedated before several volunteers were able to hold it still before cutting its tusks.

Jack today

Some visitors felt that Jack should be returned back to the wild. Its too domesticated for that now. Ubin lovers remember Priscilla, the female boar at Chek Jawa.

You can see Jack at “Orchid Farm”, 180 meters south of Maman beach. Make sure you collect lots of rubber seeds from the rubber trees nearby that area. Jack loves them.

Here is a link of another picture of Jack by Thomas Hoven. We all shared his feelings of Ubin.

Thanks for this post! And your very enlightening blog. I learn so much about beloved Ubin from you. You and your friends are doing good work there. Bravo!

I am humbled. The blog idea came about accidentally. I didn’t know I have so much materials from knowledgeable people like you and KP Tan plus the early digital cameras I used. Most of the scenes have disappeared. Its so depressing I stopped visiting Ubin. Its a miracle that Ubin is still around, thanks to your untiring efforts to save Chek Jawa. Its still worth telling people about this special island.

Thank you for making the quality of life so good for Jack. Hope he is still around. I fell in love with wild boars when I bought a stuffed Steiff wild boar when I was dumped by my boyfriend. When I looked up wild boar on the internet I came across Jack and Oh what a sweety may God bless him and give him a long happy life. xx, Nicolette.

I got really worried when swine flu broke out. I thought Jack might be culled just like the chickens in Ubin during the last bird flu scare. Jack is doing great. The rubber trees are not seeding yet but durians is in season so he gets all the leftovers.
