Animal rescues

Ubin can be a unforgiving place for animals. There are thoughtless people who set wire snares to trap them. I have freed birds and monitor lizards from their traps. Sometimes Ubin residents would ask me to help their dogs who are injured. The Negasunt powder from Bayer is very effective against maggot wounds. They cost about $10 each and comes in a small plastic bottle through which powder is squeezed out. I would gave them away, knowing that the lives of many dogs have been saved. (Negasunt should not be used on cats however).

How to apply. Leash the dog if possible, otherwise distract the dog with food. Invert the bottle and shake the powder towards the bottle opening, bring it close to the wound and give a quick squeeze. The dog may be startled and move away. Attempt again until the wound is covered with powder. Repeat a few days later.

Here is the story of GI Jane. She was named GI because of her sheer will to live.

GI Jane has an eye wound several days old. It was so bad that there is no tissue around her eyeball which is rolling in her socket. We mounted a rescue the next day. The distressed pooch was brought over to the mainland for treatment. The vet examined her eyes and informed us that there is nothing he can do. Maggots have eaten right into her skull and she needs to be put down to end her suffering.

By a twist of fate, Mohan who is a seasoned animal rescuer decided to nurse her back to health despite the near impossible odds.

GI Jane is now with PetVilla, a no-kill shelter. She looked none the worse after her near tragic experience.

Ticks infestation is also another problem I have to deal with often. The jungle is full of these bloodsuckers especially during wet seasons. Its so bad that ticks bloated with blood dropped off like popcorn just by brushing over the fur. In such environment ticks cannot be eradicated but can be minimized. For this I use carbaryl powder which is sold under the brand name Sevin. Its cheap and highly effective. I would dust the dogs and they and their sleeping areas would be free of ticks within a week.

This is April. She was dusted with Negasunt powder after being bitten by a monkey. Sadly she passed away a few months later.

Not a pretty sight. Negasunt stopped the wound from growing and the dog was saved.

Pulau Ubin dogs tend to be medium size with friendly temperament. Sometimes visitors see them as unwanted strays. Dogs can be highly intelligent if you read this interesting article on Moscow’s metro strays.

Negasunt powder can be used for flies control. Sprinkle some of on their favorite food to poison them.

Due to many hits for information on Negasunt, I am passing additional tips from Mr. Harrell Graham, a tireless dog rescuer :-

Negasunt (coumaphos) and tweezers to the Rescue
    ——————————————————————

… You can buy a small plastic bottle of powder known as Negasunt in Thailand in most any pharmacy or pet store or farm/animal store. The plastic bottle has a cute little picture of squirming maggots on the label (no kidding.) If the dog will let you then it is better to get your tweezers and flashlight to pull out as many of the squirming flesh-eaters as you can—before you sprinkle the Negasunt in the open wound. You want to remove as many as possible before medicating because the more maggots that die inside the wound the harder it is on the dog. Much better to pull them out with tweezers before sprinkling the powder on. Having a bright light, sunshine or headlamp, or someone to hold a flashlight for you—get the bright light shining right inside the hole/wound. Take a cotton cloth or tissue paper in one hand and tweezers in the other, dab the bloody goo from inside the hole so you can see the aliens (maggots). You will just see what looks like the end of a grain of rice. Stick your tweezers in there and grab it. When you pull it out you might be surprised to see two maggots not just the one you thought you were grabbing. Put the maggots in your cup/bowl of a little heiter (bleach) and water. Dab up some more bloody goo with your tissue so you can continue having visibility inside the hole. Keep working like this until you’ve gotten as many as you can. The maggots eat along the outer rim of the circle hole so you will be amazed at how many you can pull out of a 2 cm hole. You might need someone to hold the flashlight so you can use one hand to lift the perimeter of the hole and your other hand for your tweezers. I carry a one-AAA battery light that I can hold in my teeth. I wear it around my neck on a string so I have it handy at night at the Wats, etc. ….If the dog has really big wounds with large numbers of maggots then he probably needs to see a vet who can anesthetize him to facilitate removal of the maggots.

Don’t breathe the Negasunt powder and wash it off if it gets on your skin, eyes, etc.

Negasunt powder is the boss!! We had a goat farm back in Trinidad and we would use this during the kidding time for navel and de-horning kids during the rainy season. Sometimes we would encounter animals that managed to get injured and infected with maggots and this would kill them dead and also promote swift healing and scar reduction. The powder keeps the wound dry and discourage other flies to lay eggs. This powder doesn’t joke around!!!! Large wounds usually heal within a week. Excellent product.
